FON is a new service aimed at making it easier to get online anywhere by making it simpler to share a wireless connection. By providing a central database of open networks, and hardware to make it easy for people to share their connection but protect their computers and data, they're helping communities provide their own always-on connections.

As they describe themselves:

FON is the largest WiFi community in the world. Our members share their wireless Internet access at home and, in return, enjoy free WiFi wherever they find another Fonero’s Access Point.

Right now there's only one access point listed for Grand Rapids. Hopefully that'll grow quickly. If you use the service, let us know how it works for you. Perhaps we'll have to start including their data on this site?
